Does a Facelift Help You Live Longer?
Does having a facelift increase your life span?
Recently, researchers have found that Botox injections help to cure depression. So, if small amounts of Botox can make feel people feel better about themselves, then does a facelift deliver the same outcome?
Dr. Eric Finzi, a Maryland dermatologist who pioneered the use of Botox to treat depression says that his findings support the facial feedback theory of Charles Darwin which suggests that the expression of your face can influence your mood.
A study conducted by the Mayo Clinic showed that women who had a facelift live more than 10 years longer than those not having a lift. It was presented at a meeting in New York sponsored by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Other studies have also shown that patients who have a facelift make a greater than average commitment to maintaining their overall health and fitness.
In yet another study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), a significant number of patients stopped taking anti-depressant medication after undergoing plastic surgery. “Plastic surgery patients are taking a proactive approach in making themselves happier by improving something that has truly bothered them,” said Bruce Freedman, MD, ASPS Member Surgeon and study author. “While we are not saying that cosmetic plastic surgery alone is responsible for the drop in patients needing antidepressants, it surely is an important factor.”
In the study, 362 patients had cosmetic plastic surgery – 17 percent or 61 patients were taking antidepressants. Six months after surgery, however, that number decreased 31 percent, down to 42 patients. In addition, 98 percent of patients said cosmetic plastic surgery had markedly improved their self-esteem.
As we age, many of us feel the young on the inside yet begin to feel frustrated when wrinkles and sagging skin begin to appear. Dating, socializing, and work performance can all begin to suffer from the decline of self- esteem that often plagues many individuals as we age.
Many baby boomers like to lead an active, fit lifestyle, and are also choosing to remain in the workforce past the traditional retirement age of 65. Competition in the job market is also prompting more Men to have cosmetic work done.
